COBH
YOUTH
GET A MODERN CENTRE TO CALL THEIR OWN
Teenagers and younger children in Cobh won’t be able to
complain any more that there “is nothing to do”.
The newly-renovated Cobh Youth Services (CYS) premises is to be
officially opened by Sean Haughey, Minister for Youth Affairs, on
Wednesday March 5th at 14:30pm. The new youth centre offers dance
classes, band practice facilities, gym, after-school classes as well as
cookery and arts and crafts to youngsters living in the area. If people
just want to ‘hang out’, the youth cafe,
‘Chill of the Hill’ is also on site.
As well as Deputy Haughey, other local dignitaries, including
Cobh’s Mayor Whitty, are expected to attend the opening.
Cobh Youth Services (CYS) was set up 15 years ago as a charitable
organisation to provide recreational facilities for the
town’s young and to counterbalance problems with underage
drinking and drug abuse. The centre is run by fully-trained staff while
local volunteers and the voluntary Board of Directors ensure the centre
maintains top standards while remaining attractive to the young people
of the area.
CYS President, Sister Emmanuel Leonard said: “These fantastic
facilities re what the young people of Cobh have asked for when we
consulted with them. This is their space.”
Co-ordinator, Sinead Morgan said: “The newly refurnished
Youth Service in Cobh has opened up many opportunities for young people
in the ever expanding town of Cobh. We look forward to the future and
invite more young people to explore all that Cobh Youth Services has to
offer.”
Before the Midleton Street premises was secured, CYS was run from a
centre on Pearse Square. Six years later, the building was demolished
and all activities had to be moved to the parish centre before CYS
found its current and permanent home on Midleton Street.
Cobh Youth Services is open to boys and girls, aged eight to eighteen
and gives them an opportunity to “socialize, use recreational
equipment and take part in structured activities”, says Sr.
Leonard.
The centre also provides counselling and youth referral services. The
developments of the centre and the provision of its services has been
achieved by extensive fundraising amongst the local community as well
as grant aid from the HSE, Department of Social, Community and Family
Affairs, Cobh Town Council, Cobh Chamber of Commerce and others.
